Director HR

Our client, a leading distributor of products that are utilized daily in diversified industries across North America, has retained our services to source a Director of HR for their Peterborough location. Piloted by strong leadership, this organization is in active growth mode; both organically and through acquisition.


Reporting directly to the C.E.O., the Director of HR will help to provide direction and operational leadership in all aspects of HR. The successful candidate must be very project based along with being a hands-on, results-oriented individual who will oversee the daily operations of the department while providing proactive support in areas such as coaching, counseling, performance management, talent management, and employee engagement.  Working collaboratively with functional managers, the Director of HR will proactively support HR initiatives, policies & programs and succession planning strategies, designed to support a positive and engaged workforce.  You will also oversee all HR functions including payroll, benefits and health and safety.


  • Collaborate with the CEO on day-to-day management and direction of the HR team
  • Implement annual HR strategy in line with the business plan
  • Capability to enhance and manage compensation, bonus and incentive programs tied to individual & company performance
  • Knowledge, understanding and capability to develop pay equity programs, salary grids and compa- ratios
  • Conduct training needs analysis and facilitates training plans with input from business heads
  • Manage costs to budget
  • Enhance and lead performance review policy
  • Develops proactive programs to recognize and engage employees on a regular basis and ensures that regular communication occurs to the organization
  • Coordinate recruitment throughout the company through management of internal and external resources
  • Deal with any performance or grievance issues in a legally compliant and professional way
  • Monitor sick and vacation
  • Negotiates and manages health benefit plans, RRSP plans, within budget
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are up to date and legally compliant
  • Salary reviews and recommendations
  • Maintain a succession plan for all departments
  • Ensure payroll is completed accurately and to deadline


  • 8 – 10 years of HR management experience
  • Post secondary degree in a relevant discipline. CHRP designation an asset
  • Involved with acquisition integrations
  • Project leader on multiple HR initiatives
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal skills, strong written & oral communication skills
  • Ability to handle confidential and difficult issues with tact and sensitivity
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced, multi-branch environment
  • Strong knowledge of Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and other related legislation
  • Knowledge of HR policies including payroll & benefits
  • Ability to coach, performance manage, lead, motivate, and manage for results
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, operationally intense industry
  • Demonstrates strong empathy and a consultative approach to resolving employee issues
  • Able to travel periodically
