Director of Engineering Services (Utilities industry)

Our Client is a leading utility infrastructure engineering company providing a comprehensive suite of engineering services to the telecom and hydro-electric Industries. Reporting to the President, you will be responsible for the scope, budget and schedule management of all engineering projects including developing standards, managing project teams and setting strategic direction and objectives.  Additionally, this position will act as the Chief Design Engineer with review and stamp authority.


  • Coach and mentor engineering staff members
  • Develop budgets and business plans to support department and organization goals
  • Interact in a team environment to ensure the timely completion of all assigned projects
  • Apply extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices across all projects
  • Review and approve scope, budgets and schedules for projects
  • Review completed project documents/drawings to ensure compliance to both HS&E, quality and industry standards
  • Ensure compliance with company, industry, trade, regulatory and jurisdictional safety standards, practices and codes
  • Utilize advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices to complete assignments
  • Review and evaluate tender documents and service contracts within organizational guidelines
  • Work with consultants, engineers, customers and other project stakeholders as necessary to ensure successful on time project execution and completion
  • Be part of the monthly reporting of the Engineering Department such as financials, project status and budgets, performance management and health and safety
  • Meet stamping requirements for all designs and drawings
  • Work in compliance with all health and safety and environmental legislation including, but not limited to, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and corporate Policies and Procedures
  • Support and encourage the health & safety protocol throughout the company


  • Degree in Electrical Engineering combined with a current P.Eng designation in good standing
  • Consulting Engineer designation or ability to gain this designation is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 6 to 8 years’ experience in engineering design
  • Known for your strong leadership/mentoring skill set and the ability to evolve high performing people
  • Experience managing electrical distribution engineering projects on time and within budget
  • Combination of strong business sense and technical aptitude

  • Strong understanding of engineering principals and procedures to be able to provide support, guide and advise as necessary using sound judgement
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communications skills with the ability to work and communicate well with all levels of the organization from entry level employees to senior management
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Effective presentations skills
  • Proven problem solving capabilities to manage and navigate through complex  matters
  • Strong understanding of safety codes including ESA 22/04 and CSA 22.3 No. 1-10
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with SPIDACalc structural analysis software or similar software is an asset
  • Working knowledge and experience with PLS (Power Line Systems) software is an asset
